Inkscape is an vector graphics app. It competes with the Adobe Illustrator. While a majority of the people are using Illustrator just because it comes under adobe, a company which is in software development for a long time and had variety of worldwide used softwares like acrobat reader, photoshop. But all these are paid ones which students and freelancers are not willing to pay. Many of us are already using free cracked version of these but now time has changed. With Inkscape like free professional softwares in the market creators are going there as it reduces the hassle to download old cracked version and risking your computers security. These free softwares are build in python and hence require about 300 mb of disk space rather than in GB’s as in  Illustrator.

Octave is freely available of MacOS, windows, Linux and workststions while MATLAB is paid software but a part of it can be freely used in MATLAB online (using on internet connection) and android app. MATLAB has an add on named SIMULINK which is widely used for various purposes from solving differential equations to determining trajectories of rockets. 4.       ANSYS Student Version and Free CAD

Free Software

If you have engineering background you must heard of it. ANSYS is an multiphysics engineering simulation software for product design, testing and operation. ANSYS uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to design and simulate computer models of structures, electronics, or machine components for analyzing strength , toughness, elasticity and various other attributes. Although the full version of ANSYS is paid but its Student Version is free to download. Free CAD is a free and open source general purpose parametric 3D Computer aided designing modeler and a building information modelling software with Finite Element method support. Its full version can be downloaded from its website. Ansys competes with Hyperworks by Altair and COMSOL which are paid softwares in category. From my observation Ansys is an clear winner because it covers a vast variety of mutidomain problems whereas others are somewhat inclined to specific domain. Free CAD competes with Solidworks, CATIA, AutoCAD and many more out of which most are paid ones. There is no clear winner in this category as it depends totally on user how he/she utilize its full potential and his requirements.
